Mission

The mission of the Office of Elementary Social Studies is to coordinate the development and implementation of the social studies program, facilitate enrichment opportunities for elementary school students, and provide professional development activities designed to improve the teaching and learning of social studies.

Objectives

  • Provide direct service to schools and conduct professional development for school stakeholders to support the successful implementation of Elementary Social Studies curricula and programs.
  • Implement the revision of a variety of programs including Grade 4 and 5 Social Studies to increase student achievement through emphasis on content and processing, including support of standards for the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework.
  • Review, evaluate, and refine social studies assessments to align with Maryland state standards, the College, Career, and Civic Life Framework, and emulate the structure of elementary standardized assessments.
  • Design and implement new instructional tools and materials to facilitate higher-order learning and a learner-centered environment in hopes to increase student scores on assessments including but not limited to the PARCC and MAP exams.
  • Work with outside agencies to develop and expand upon programs that enrich student learning by focusing on authentic learning opportunities and real-world experiences.
