Child Nutrition Programs

Child Nutrition Programs are federally funded programs administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Office of Food and Nutrition Services (OFNS), and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).  Each program operates under a separate set of regulations.

Nutritionally balanced, affordable breakfasts are provided to students each school day.  School breakfast menus must meet meal requirements specific to the age/grade group of students served.  Eligible sites may operate an in-classroom breakfast model before school starts each day.

Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)
After-School Meals Program - Snack and Supper meals are available to students who participate in a regularly scheduled and planned educational or enrichment activity in a structured and supervised setting.  School-age children are eligible to participate through 18 years of age.

Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)

Meals and snacks provided to children during the summer months when regular school is not in session.  School-age children are eligible up through age 18.  Meal sites are located in areas where at least 50% of the enrolled students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.  Meals are served at no cost.  Summer school programs operating during the summer months provide a breakfast and/or lunch service for students attending in those areas.

Food Distribution Program

The USDA provides purchased food items to support the National School Lunch Program and the Summer Food Service Program.  The school district is eligible to receive USDA foods called "entitlement" foods at a value set by USDA.  Donated foods must be of domestic origin.  A wide variety of foods are available including cheese, flour, other grain products, meat, poultry, and fruits and vegetables.
