February 26, 2026, Staff & Community Message: Retirement Announcement from Superintendent Dr. Myriam Rogers – Thank You, Team BCPS
Dear Team BCPS–
Thirty years ago, when I welcomed my first group of students into my chemistry classroom at Woodlawn High School, I knew I had found my purpose. Working with students and helping shape their lives was exactly where I belonged. Thirty years later, with deep gratitude for this journey, I am announcing my retirement from Baltimore County Public Schools, effective July 1, 2026, after thoughtful reflection and conversations with my family and loved ones.
I am humbled by the privilege to have begun and concluded my career serving Team BCPS, and I am confident that I am leaving the system strategically positioned for continued success.
When I was appointed as superintendent three years ago, the charge was clear: reverse the trajectory of academic decline in BCPS. Together, we have made meaningful progress in a short time, and I am proud of what we have accomplished on behalf of our 108,000 students. Recently, when asked by the State Board of Education what has driven our gains across multiple measures of student performance, my answer was simple: the relentless, focused efforts of Team BCPS. Our teachers, administrators, support staff, and central office employees locked in on the mission, and the evidence of that intentional work is clear.
In just three years:
- More students in grades K–3 are reading at or above grade level.
- Students made gains on 14 of 16 English and math assessment measures.
- Science proficiency increased across levels.
- BCPS posted the greatest improvement in chronic absenteeism in the state.
- We earned the most five-star schools in the state for two consecutive years.
- The number of four-star schools increased by 82 percent over two years.
- Sixty-four schools improved their Maryland Star ratings.
- Nine of the top ten elementary schools and two of the top five high schools in the state are in BCPS.
- BCPS had the highest one-year increase in English language proficiency among similarly sized systems for multilingual learners.
- A differentiated support model for CSI and ATSI schools helped improved student performance across key measures.
- Wraparound supports expanded through the community school model in 110 schools.
- Student access to mental health resources increased to better support social-emotional needs and safe learning environments.
- Full-day prekindergarten classes expanded by more than 2,000 seats across all zones.
- Staff built shared language and understanding around high-quality instruction through Research for Better Teaching.
- Infrastructure was strengthened through a new ERP system and 11 major capital projects.
These are just a few examples of what Team BCPS has accomplished. In the months ahead, I will continue to highlight our progress and amplify the stories of our talented students and staff.
Thank you to Team BCPS, the Board of Education, our elected officials, stakeholders, and community partners for entrusting me with this work of increasing achievement, strengthening climate and safety, and improving operational effectiveness. We have laid a stronger foundation, and I am confident the next leader of BCPS, in partnership with all stakeholders, will continue accelerating student achievement and building toward our shared vision of BCPS as one of the highest-performing school systems in the nation.
I will always be a proud supporter of and advocate for Team BCPS.
Regards,
Dr. Myriam Rogers
