May 9, 2025 Staff and Community Update: Important Information on Dangerous Social Media Challenge
Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) staff have been made aware of a dangerous social media challenge students across the state and nation are participating in that involves students sticking sharp objects into the USB port of school-issued devices. Inserting objects into the USB port can cause the device to short circuit or catch fire. We would like to remind our parents and students that any intentional damage to a BCPS issued Chromebook is a violation of Board Policy 6202 (Technology Acceptable Use for Students), and this behavior will not be tolerated. These actions will be considered a Category II offense in accordance with the BCPS Student Handbook: “destruction and/or vandalism of school property, personal property of students and/or faculty.” If the vandalism results in a fire, it will be considered a Category III offense - “Arson.” The intentional vandalism of a Chromebook, resulting in a dangerous outcome like fire, smoke, electrical sparks puts students, staff, and school facilities in danger, and BCPS will seek full restitution and other legal outcomes.
BCPS takes this matter very seriously as it could impact the safety of our students, staff, and facilities. Parents/caregivers, please reinforce with your students the importance of making good choices and navigating the influence of social media. Parents should also be aware the impact of these social media trends extend beyond the schoolhouse. This resource provides helpful tips on how to engage your student in a conversation about Social Media Challenges.
