For most BCPS students, Wednesday, September 16, will be a regular school day. For Menyelek Rose, a senior at Randallstown High School, it will be the day when he will see models wearing about a dozen of his clothing designs walk down a runway during Fashion Week in New York City.

Rose and his partner, Rodney Sawyerr, a Maryland college student, have launched a brand of high-end streetwear called The Outsiders. Their clothing, which can be seen and ordered from www.rebel1966.com, will be shown in New York as part of a group show coordinated by Milano.

A self-taught designer, Rose cannot remember a time when he was not interested in fashion. He describes designing as a way to “be a part of someone’s everyday life.”

The Outsiders’ website says that “the concept of the brand pertains to living outside the social norm and completely expressing individuality in addition to aspects of pride and empowerment in one’s self. Historic movements like the legendary “Black Panther” party heavily influence the brand and its direction.”

Rose explains that many pieces incorporate photographs of important figures from black history – such as civil rights leader Malcolm X and artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. “With each piece of clothing,” Rose said, “people also get a piece of knowledge.”

Rose is excited about New York Fashion Week as an opportunity to gain exposure and experience that will help him as he build a career in fashion. After graduating from Randallstown High in 2016, he hopes to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology, Drexel University or another design school in the vicinity of New York.
