The Office of Leadership Development supports the development of BCPS staff who aspire to positions of leadership. Based on the fundamental belief that leadership skills and knowledge can be learned and cultivated, Leadership Development provides professional learning experiences and resources designed to foster the growth of effective leaders. The differentiated components of the Leadership Development program provide opportunities for participants to develop and apply leadership skills as they support the vision and mission of the Superintendent and assist schools in achieving the progress indicators. In working to develop the effective leaders who are essential to school success, the office focuses on two main leadership cohorts: aspiring leaders and current leaders.

CURRENT LEADERS

School-based Administrative Induction and Support Program (SBAI) for New Principals and Assistant Principals

The SBAI Program for first-year administrators is a yearlong program designed to support new principals and assistant principals in their work. The emphasis is on supporting, maintaining, and leading a high quality instructional program. Participants study best practices for supporting quality instruction particularly through the appraisal process, and learn about systemwide compliance procedures and regulations. Meetings are held monthly, and new principals and assistant principals engage in conversation with one another, with administrative mentors, and with central office staff.

Annual Principals' Conference

Each summer the DODL hosts a two day professional learning opportunity that serves as a time for principals to learn and grow while engaging in wellness experiences and connecting with colleagues.

Principals' Leadership Development (PLD)
Full-day leadership learning sessions for executive leadership staff and all BCPS principals are held throughout the year to build our BCPS community of lead learners and equip them with the skills and knowledge that will enhance their current performance.

Assistant Principals’ Professional Development (APPD)
Aligned with the full-day leadership learning sessions for principals, BCPS assistant principals participate in accompanying half-day sessions throughout the year to build our BCPS community of lead learners and equip them with the skills and knowledge that will enhance their current performance.

New Administrators’ Academy (NAA)
Held annually each summer, NAA provides support to newly appointed principals and assistant principals to familiarize them with BCPS policies and procedures and the basic requirements of their new roles.
