Courses, Grade 1 Social Studies:

Social studies instruction is intended to provide the knowledge of content and appropriate skills so students can become active, involved citizens of the community. In Grade 1 Social Studies, students study the following units. 

Unit 1: Geography Basics

Students will be introduced to basic geography skills including map elements, land forms, man-made features and relative locations. At the end of the unit, students will be asked to locate places using these geographic tools. This introductory unit will provide the basic geography skills necessary for success in future geography lessons.

Unit 2: My Local Community

Students will learn about their local community, Baltimore County, Maryland, by exploring four themes: geography, economics, society and culture, and political science. At the end of the unit, students will create a realtor listing for their community that lists or shows geographic, economic, political, and cultural benefits to living in Baltimore County.

Unit 3: My State is a Community

Students will learn about their state community, Maryland, by exploring four themes: geography, economics, society and culture, and political science. At the end of the unit, students will create a travel brochure for Maryland highlighting these themes.

Unit 4: My Nation is a Community

Students will learn about their national community, the United States of America, by exploring four themes: geography, economics, society and culture, and political science. At the end of the unit, students will choose one theme that needs to be changed to improve the quality of life in the United States.
