Verletta White named superintendent of Baltimore County schools

New superintendent is a BCPS graduate, career educator, and parent

Towson, MD- The Board of Education of Baltimore County has named Verletta White as the next superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools, the nation’s 25th largest school system.

When her term begins on July 1, 2018, she will be the first woman to serve as BCPS superintendent since the school system was established in the late 1840s. She is the first local educator to serve as superintendent since Dr. Anthony Marchione’s term ended in 2000.

Leading up to the vote, Board Chair Edward Gilliss, Esq., said, “I have had the opportunity to observe Verletta White for over five years. I have observed her in leadership roles. I have observed her in difficult situations. I have listened to key Baltimore County Public Schools members, such as Sean McComb, who was the United States Teacher of the Year, speak so glowingly about Mrs. White. I have listened to teachers and administrators. I am confident that stability, that consistency, and that locally-rooted leadership are key for this system. I am confident that Verletta White will lead with strength and with passion and with a gentle nature.”

Board Vice Chair Nicholas Stewart, Esq., said, “This is the most important decision we make as a board, and I believe that we would be making the right one by offering the permanent superintendency to Ms. White. We have had the opportunity to see Ms. White in action as a superintendent since May of last year and as our chief academic officer for years before that. As a board member, I have seen her operate on a day-to-day level. There has been no better tryout and no better crucible than that. I can say confidently that Ms. White is a leader. She is a bridge builder. She is problem solver. She sets a vision and she executes with grit and with grace.”

After the vote was taken at the April 17 board meeting, the audience of community members and BCPS staff erupted into a standing ovation for White, who has been serving as interim superintendent for almost a year and, prior to that, served as the school system’s chief academic officer. In recent years, White has led change in almost every aspect of the school system, resulting in rising graduation rates and the elimination of the black-white graduation gap as well as an emphasis on school safety, culture, and climate and enhanced student literacy.

White, a Baltimore native who attended Woodmoor Elementary and Woodlawn Middle schools before graduating from Woodlawn High School, began her teaching career in 1992 as an elementary school teacher in Baltimore City. She joined BCPS as a teacher in 1995 and served as a school-based administrator from 1998 - 2006. As a member of the superintendent’s senior and executive staff since 2006, White has served BCPS in a variety of capacities: executive director of professional development; area assistant superintendent for the Northeast Area; and assistant superintendent for elementary schools.

As chief academic officer, from 2013 - 2017, White was responsible for defining and communicating the vision of the school system while directing a division of more than 500 curriculum and student support staff. White directly oversaw the work of four community superintendents to align school instructional programs and student services.

White holds a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Towson University, a Master of Arts degree in leadership in teaching from Notre Dame of Maryland University, and she is a doctoral candidate in urban educational leadership at Morgan State University. She and her husband are the proud parents of two BCPS students, and the family lives in Freeland, in northern Baltimore County.
