BCPS schools celebrated International Peace Day

Pinwheels popped up on school grounds throughout the county as schools celebrated International Peace Day, September 21, by participating in the worldwide art installation project Pinwheels for Peace and hosting special activities in their schools.

Students at Dundalk Middle School started their day with a moment of silence. They next watched a video created by fellow students and their music teacher, Ms. Carter. In addition to creating and displaying pinwheels for peace, the students also used colorful chalk to send peace- filled messages to people in all 18 nations that its students represent.

Rodgers Forge Elementary School used the day to reinforce its schoolwide "PEACE" program to help students make good choices in class. At Rodgers Forge, "peace" stands for:

P olite to others
E ncouraging to your peers
A cting responsibly
C onflict solver
E mpowered to make the right decisions

Students created pinwheels and planted them outside, sang a special peace song, wore tie dye and peace signs, and engaged in meaningful discussions about what peace is, what it means to them, and what peace looks like.
