Three BCPS choirs participate in America Sings!

Choirs from three BCPS schools - Carney Elementary, Perry Hall Middle, and Overlea High - traveled to Washington D.C. to participate in the America Sings! 25thAnniversary on the Washington Mall.

School groups attending the festival performed individually on and then took part in a clinic with a nationally known composer/director/musician. All of the participating choirs (totaling 1500 students) came together as one mass choir to perform on the Mall. Two students from Overlea High School and one current and two former Perry Hall Middle School students were selected by audition to be soloists and readers during the grand finale event.

In addition to the high-quality musical experience that was provided for all participating students, the event was also held to encourage young people to perform community service. To help underscore this idea, student participants at the festival worked together to produce more than 1,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, which were later delivered to a homeless shelter. Students also assembled thousands of care packages that included toys, toiletries, and personal messages of encouragement, along with several tons of canned goods that were donated to the Capitol Area Food Bank.
