Students at Dundalk Elementary recreate outer space

The third grade science and art departments from Dundalk Elementary School collaborated on an interdisciplinary outer space science and art unit.

Dundalk art teachers, Beth Thompson and Stephanie Jones, designed a space tunnel display in which all the artwork hung from the ceiling and walls to give the effect of walking into outer space.

Art classes created the background of outer space, and some students created portraits of themselves as astronauts. Students learned various art techniques while creating their outer space artwork such as watercolor resist, 3-D relief, and color blending and portraiture.

Science classes explored the NASA website and learned about various planets and the daily life of an astronaut. They learned about stars, constellations, planets, astronaut suit equipment, and materials needed to survive in outer space.
