Ravens mascot visits Villa Cresta students who completed summer learning challenge

What did you do during your summer vacation?

For at least 170 Villa Cresta Elementary School students, the answer is that they kept right on learning.

As a reward for completing the school’s annual summer learning challenge, these students were surprised on September 7 with an ice cream sundae party with special guest Poe, the mascot of the Baltimore Ravens.

At the beginning of the summer, all Villa Cresta Elementary students receive a long checklist of ways that they can have fun and continue to learn over the summer. Along with many other possibilities, this list includes:

  • Taking a hike
  • Stargazing
  • Visiting the Maryland Science Center
  • Attending story hours at local bookstore
  • Taking a long car ride
  • Keeping track of the Baltimore Orioles wins and losses
  • Going beachcombing and drawing the shells and other objects found
  • Memorizing three poems with a friend
  • Creating a family tree
  • Catching their moms reading or writing
  • Writing a letter to their favorite authors
  • Rewriting a picture book
  • Writing a new ending for a book
  • Developing a crossword puzzle
  • Creating a puppet show
  • Identifying things that can be recycled
  • Creating a weather chart
  • Tracking the moon for one week
  • Doing push-ups or sit ups every day, and making a chart of progress
  • Taking a calculator to the grocery store to keep a running tab of expected total
  • Measuring things around the home and then ranking them by length
  • Practicing math facts (again!)
