Woodmoor Elementary fourth graders raise funds for Japanese tsunami relief

When grade 4 students at Woodmoor Elementary School saw images of the tsunami in Japan and read articles about it in their Time for Kids magazine, they decided to take action.

They told their teachers that they wanted to collect money to help the children impacted by the disaster. To learn more about the tsunami, they used the computer lab to conduct research. To encourage others to give, they created posters.

The teachers used the opportunity to reinforce the students’ writing skills. They challenged the students to write letters asking others in the community to give. Some of these letters have been read on the intercom as part of morning announcements.

The grade 4 students, about 100 boys and girls, continue to collect and to inspire admiration from school staff for their generosity and caring.
