Dogwood Elementary School celebrates Math Night

On Wednesday, February 24, Dogwood Elementary School in Woodlawn celebrated its annual Family Math Night.

Students and their families gathered for a fun evening of games, snacks, and prizes to celebrate math learning. In the gym, families participated in a frog-jumping contest and were challenged to solve tangram puzzles (seven-piece puzzles that originated in China). The school library/media center was the hub for math literature and computer games. In the cafeteria, students were able to create snack bags of measured munchies. They could then create bead jewelry following mathematical patterns.

The highlight of the evening was the opportunity to win one of many fantastic “estimation jars.” Each homeroom class had collected items such as dice, Matchbox® cars, or candy to fill a jar. Each student then received three estimation tickets when he or she arrived on math night. The closest estimate won the contents of the jar. Winners were announced the next morning during morning announcements on Dogwood Dalmatian Station News Channel 7.
