Kindergarten is required for all students living in the state of Maryland. According to COMAR 13A.08.01.02, Age of School Attendance, a child is eligible to enroll in Kindergarten when he/she turns 5 years old on or before September 1 of the year in which the child is seeking enrollment.
Parents should contact their neighborhood elementary school to register their child for Kindergarten. Schools begin registering students for Kindergarten in the spring, and continue to accept registrations throughout the summer.

The Kindergarten Report
Card has been revised to better reflect how young children learn and grow. The
updated report card provides families with clear, meaningful information about
students’ progress across academic and developmental areas, using indicators
aligned to kindergarten instruction. These updates support consistent
communication between teachers and families and help families better understand
their child’s strengths and areas for continued growth.
