Announcing the 2026 Team BCPS Haiku Contest
The 2026 Team BCPS Haiku Contest will celebrate student writing, student art, and student voice. All BCPS students, from Kindergarten through Grade 12, are encouraged to enter. Students will be asked to write works inspired by a piece of student artwork selected from among 10 pieces.
At the end of the contest, three winners will be selected (one each at the elementary, middle, and high school levels) and awarded prizes. This year's contest will accept entries from 8:30 a.m. on Monday, February 23, through 4:45 p.m. on Friday, March 6. Winners will be announced on Friday, April 17, International Haiku Day. Winners will receive a gift bag, including a $100 Amazon gift card, from The Education Foundation of BCPS, Inc., a prize from The Ivy Bookshop, and framed prints of their haiku and the artwork that inspired them.
In addition to the winning haiku, additional haiku, selected by the contest judges, will be used to compile an online book. Each school library will receive a print copy.
Haiku is a form of poetry that originated in Japan. A haiku consists of three lines. The first line has five syllables, the second line has seven syllables, and the third line has five syllables. BCPS uses the How Many Syllables website to check syllable counts. Each student may enter only one haiku, and it must be an original poem. Haiku found to be plagiarized will be disqualified. Students are encouraged to be creative in their use of imagery and vocabulary.
