The Chief Academic Officer provides vision, leadership, and expertise in the development of curricular and instructional initiatives that support achievement for all Baltimore County students. The development of curricula, based on research and best practices, provides teachers, students, and parents with a quality instructional program that is firmly based on the state standards. The division provides service to schools to support the effective implementation of curriculum, to meet the instructional needs of teachers, and learning needs of students.

Division Purpose and Core Values

Purpose

The Division of Curriculum and Instruction supports schools through the development, selection, and implementation of high-quality instructional materials, evidence-based practices, and professional development to enhance teaching effectiveness and to elevate student achievement, preparing students for success in college, careers, and community.

Core Value

Our success is determined by the success of students, teachers, and schools, and it is our responsibility to:

  • Partner and share resources to provide services and support that promote a systemwide approach to learning.
  • Identify and teach high-yield instructional practices to teachers and administrators.
  • Respond to instructional practices or behaviors that are not aligned with the systemwide goals and expectations or do not serve students.
  • Leverage students’ strengths that are essential to supporting academic achievement.
  • Provide grade-level curriculum as a foundation for instruction.
  • Support the development of literacy and academic language across content areas to support teaching and learning for students.
  • Collaborate, partner, and share resources with divisions, offices, schools, families, and community stakeholders to support the success of students.
  • Consistently pursue excellence by adapting, changing, or enhancing our practices based on outcomes and research.
  • Encourage creativity and innovation by staying informed about new and effective teaching materials and practices.
  • Embrace fresh ideas and adapt to our changing world, ensuring that we meet the learning needs of both students and educators today and in the future.

Public Notice

As outlined in Policy and Rule 6002, prior to consideration by the Board of Education of Baltimore County (Board), all instructional materials intended for systemwide student use will be placed on public display in order to provide parents and community members an opportunity for review and comment. Current instructional materials under review are linked below.
