The BCPS Comprehensive Health Education (CHE) curriculum is organized around the eight National Health Education Standards (NHES) and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) health education framework.
The first standard, Core Concepts, provides students the functional knowledge that is needed to establish, promote, and support health-enhancing behaviors. In BCPS, students will comprehend core concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health, including:
(a) Mental and emotional health;
(b) Substance abuse prevention;
(c) Family life and human sexuality;
(d) Safety and violence prevention;
(e) Healthy eating; and
(f) Disease prevention and control.
Standards two through eight of the NHES address the health skills needed to establish, promote, and support health-enhancing behaviors. The BCPS CHE curriculum promotes student demonstration of the health skills related to analyzing influences, accessing information, interpersonal communication, decision-making, self-management (practicing health-enhancing behaviors), goal-setting and advocacy.
