Celebrating Our 2018 Graduating Seniors

We will be posting a new graduating senior profile each day leading up to May 25, the last day for seniors.

Charles Alexander Demery

Woodlawn High School
(Woodmoor Elementary, Church Lane Elementary Technology, Sudbrook Magnet Middle)

Tell us about a teacher, assignment, field trip, or extracurricular activity that had a significant impact on you during your years as a BCPS student?

Band has probably had the most impact in my life as a BCPS student since I have dedicated so much of my 5th grade year and my high school years to being a member of the band. It has become my passion, and I believe I will continue to grow and improve each year I invest in playing the baritone. Joining the band has even altered my plans for college a bit, as I now plan to join various musical associations at my chosen college.

During your years as a BCPS student, what did you accomplish that you are most proud of?

During my years as a BCPS student, I am most proud of being valedictorian and being in that top percentile all four years of my high school career. I find it really gratifying that the hard work I put into all my classes has earned me such an honor. It wasn’t always easy trying to keep my grades up to remain at the same rank, especially while taking honors, advanced academic GT, AP and even college courses and being involved in the National Society of Black Engineers, Jr., the Robotics Club, National Honor Society and the marching band all four years. However, being named valedictorian has made it worthwhile.

What’s next for you? What are your college or employment plans after graduation?

Charles, at the beginning of his
BCPS journey

I have accepted my admissions into Morgan State University and the Clara I. Adams Honors College. My plan is to major in industrial engineering and become a member of the Magnificent Marching Machine [Morgan’s legendary marching band].

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I would have earned my master’s and doctorate degrees in engineering and acquired a job in my chosen field.

Favorite book:

Watchmen (a comic book limited series)

Favorite quote:

“Et tu, Brutus” Julius Caesar (for thematic reasons)

Favorite movie:

Apocalypse Now

Throughout his time at Woodlawn, Charles has been an exemplar student inside and outside of the classroom. Charles is an extremely bright student, whose diligence and thirst for knowledge has helped him to maintain his place as the top ranked student of the 326 member senior class. In addition to the rigorous load of honors, GT, and AP classes that Charles has been tackling since middle school, he is also one of select handful of our seniors who will be completing our five credit Project Lead the Way Engineering Program.

“Charles’s enthusiasm, self-determination, and quirky sense of humor have earned the respect and admiration of Woodlawn students and teachers alike. I whole-heartedly believe that Charles will be successful with any venture he embarks upon.”

Brian Stewart, school counselor
