Celebrating Our 2018 Graduating Seniors

We will be posting a new graduating senior profile each day leading up to May 25, the last day for seniors.

Timoteo Gutierrez

Western School of Technology
(Sudbrook Middle Magnet)

Tell us about a teacher, assignment, field trip, or extracurricular activity that had a significant impact on you during your years as a BCPS student?

A teacher who has had a great impact on me during my most recent years as a BCPS student is Mr. Kurtz, the mechanical construction/plumbing teacher at Western. Mr. Kurtz taught me the importance of responsibility, work ethic, and taking pride in whatever you do. These characteristics have helped me throughout these last four years in high school and have shaped how I take on challenges.

During your years as a BCPS student, what did you accomplish that you are most proud of?

During my years as a BCPS student, I was able to maintain satisfactory grades, most recently having maintained a 3.5+ GPA throughout my four years of high school. This has only been possible thanks to the great teachers and counselors that I have had that kept me motivated and focused.

What’s next for you? What are your college or employment plans after graduation?

Starting next fall, I will be attending the University of Maryland, Baltimore County where I will be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in information systems.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I see myself enjoying my career, traveling frequently, and helping out in my community in whichever way I can.

Favorite quote:

“The more difficult the victory, the greater the happiness in winning.” – Pele

“There are those particular students who stand out in a teacher’s mind, who elicit a certain level of fondness, pride and satisfaction and who reinforce the reasons we teach. Tim Gutierrez is one of those students for me.

Timoteo Gutierrez, at the beginning of his BCPS journey

“I taught Tim in sixth and seventh grade in the French magnet at Sudbrook Middle where he took to the language quickly and reached an intermediate level proficiency within a year. He helped other students achieve. At Western Tech, Tim is in the mechanical construction/plumbing magnet. Through his dedication to his magnet and his overall achievements in school and in my class, Tim definitely has shown himself to be a true Western student, demonstrating courtesy, respect, and responsibility.

“He is inquisitive. He is self-motivated and has no problem engaging in self-driven independent inquiry if for any other reason than to know more about the topic he’s studying. He always does his best, and his best comes easily to him. He was the first person at Western Tech to score a 5 on the AP French test. He took the exam as a sophomore.

“Tim is charismatic but also humble. He is a man of morals and character. While one could classify him as popular, he is friendly with all sorts of students. He smiles and is polite to everyone. I’ve witnessed him stand up for LGBT staff, help students who are struggling academically without judgment, and lead our soccer team with encouragement and positivity as team captain. Tim has also been involved in the French National Honor Society for three years, and this year is the president of the society. To be enrolled, one must have a 3.0 overall GPA and a 3.5 GPA in French. (His GPA is 4.0 in French at Western.)
