Arooj Zia

Owings Mills High School
(Dumbarton Middle)

Tell us about a teacher, assignment, field trip, or extracurricular activity that had a significant impact on you during your years as a BCPS student?

I arrived to the United States and immediately enrolled at Dumbarton Middle School. ALL of my teachers at Dumbarton Middle supported me and made me feel that I can accomplish ANYTHING. I fell in love with learning. My high school years at Owings Mills have been amazing. My teachers challenged me in the class and guided me to be a leader outside of the classroom. As a child, my beliefs have always been God first, family second and education third. As a graduating senior, I can say that Owings Mills High School is my family.

During your years as a BCPS student, what did you accomplish that you are most proud of?

Even though my grades were great and I was working hard, I never thought that I could afford college. My school counselor told about the opportunity to become an Early College Access student. I was extremely scared and worried. She walked me through steps and made sure that I was enrolled. She taught me how to maximize my time and remain even when transportation was difficult. It was my BEST decision ever! My professors are great, and I have made that college connection.

What’s next for you? What are your college or employment plans after graduation?

To date I have completed 15 credits in computer science, and I hope to earn my associate’s degree from CCBC and then transfer.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Ten years from now, I will be completing my Ph.D and continue my love of mathematics through computer science.

“She wants to do her best—to be the best—and works tirelessly to prove herself in the classroom, on the job, and in afterschool activities.Arooj has overcome language barriers as a former ESOL student, and moved from standard level courses as a freshman to AP level courses as a junior and senior. There isn’t space enough for me to laud her accomplishments or extol her praises. She values knowledge not for its rewards, but for the intrinsic benefits she receives from learning. She is truly a model student.”

Emily Blumenauer, AP English teacher
