Celebrating Our 2018 Graduating Seniors

We will be posting a new graduating senior profile each day leading up to May 25, the last day for seniors.

Keana Brooks

Milford Mill Academy
(Windsor Mill Middle School)

Tell us about a teacher, assignment, field trip, or extracurricular activity that had a significant impact on you during your years as a BCPS student?

She’s technically not a teacher, she’s seen more as a mentor in my eyes, but my middle school librarian, Mrs. Love has made a huge impact on my time at BCPS. On the first day of school, she made it her mission to make me feel welcome. Even to this day, I still make visits to make sure she doesn’t miss me too much. She is definitely a mother figure for me.

During your years as a BCPS student, what did you accomplish that you are most proud of?

In my 9 years as a BCPS student, one accomplishments that I am most proud of is the opportunity I was given to represent my class as their secretary. I worked under my advisors, Mr. Johnson and Mrs. Ingram, as well as my fellow officers, to help plan events and fundraisers throughout the year. I also take pride in the Class of 2018 mural being painted by me and one of my two closest friends, Amber and Aissatou.

What’s next for you? What are your college or employment plans after graduation?

After graduation, I will continue my pursuit for a higher education at American University in DC for the next four years. I will be majoring in Communications studies and taking up a minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I see myself working at a nonprofit organization proudly advocating for the rights of Women, People of Color, and LGBTQIA citizens worldwide...Hopefully in New York City...with my future dog, named Atticus, and my future cat, named Fitch :)

“I have worked with Keana for three years as her counselor and have worked closely with her this past year as the senior class sponsor. Keana currently serves as the secretary of her graduating class. Keana goes above and beyond her requirements as secretary and takes on much more than her required tasks. She has played a major role as a leader in her class, and I know she will do the same at American University in the fall. Keana is the president of MMA’s Future Business Leaders of America, is a photographer for our school newspaper, and is a member of our National Honors Society. Keana also works at Wegman’s Supermarket 20 hours a week.

“In addition to serving as a class officer, Keana also excels as a model student. Keana is a student in our Allied Health Program and currently has a 4.29 weighted GPA, ranking her 20 out of 361 students.

“Keana is always willing to help others, to volunteer to get a job done, and show appreciation and affection to her peers and teachers. Keana has a twin sister in her class and has done an excellent job of establishing her independence while showing love and respect for her sister. She and her sister have different interests and plan to attend different colleges. This is a brave step for a twin and shows that she is ready to take on new challenges and does not fear the exciting experience of becoming a college student. It has been a pleasure to work with Keana. She will definitely be on the list of students I will always remember.”

Zillah Ingram, M.Ed., NCC, LGPC, school counselor
