Book Recommendations - Glick’s Picks

"Glick's Picks" will run each week this summer with reading recommendations for Baltimore County Public Schools students and families. Fran Glick is currently the coordinator of library media for BCPS. In the past, she has served as an elementary and high school library media specialist. She loves to share literature with students, and, as an adjunct professor at Towson University, she teaches courses in children's and young adult literature. She delights in suggesting books for students and introducing adults to the power of books written for children and teens.

I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark – Debbie Levy

Did you ever stand up for what you thought was right? Ruth Bader Ginsburg has spent a lifetime doing just that. She grew up in a time when women had limited life choices, but as a girl found a way to stand up for her beliefs. By standing up for herself and her beliefs, she went on to law school, a career in law, and a seat on the Supreme Court of the United States. Today she is often referred to as the Notorious RBG. Her story of persistence, hard work, and determination is inspirational!  It will make you think about how you act on your beliefs as you see how RBG has acted on hers.

Words With Wings – Nikki Grimes

This is in free verse and tells the story of Gabby who uses her daydreams to escape from her life.  Sometimes her dreaming is a challenge for those who do not understand. It is not until a teacher encourages her to turn her dreams into writing that she is able to express her creativity and give voice to her thoughts. Gabby’s story will inspire dreamers everywhere to find ways to creatively express their ideas. If you are a dreamer or know a dreamer, this book is for you!
