Baltimore County Student Councils
The Baltimore County Student Councils (BCSC) is an organization, comprised
of secondary school students, that is affiliated with the Baltimore
County Board of Education and the Maryland Association of Student Councils
. The BCSC mission statement reads: "We, the Baltimore County Student
Councils (BCSC), in the mission to represent, lobby for, and better
the welfare of all students in Baltimore County, strive for diverse
representation and visibility to all students, teachers, administrators,
parents, legislators, board members, and others. We envision ourselves
as a diverse and open organization empowering ourselves and our peers."
The purpose of the Baltimore County Student Councils is to act as the
official voice of, and as a representative for, the more than 109,000
students and secondary school student councils of Baltimore County.
BCSC promotes the welfare of the students of Baltimore County and works
on behalf of their education. It promotes the activities of the student
councils and establishes unity among the schools of Baltimore County.
The organization also shares constructive ideas, solves common problems,
and encourages better school-community relations in order to foster
understanding and cooperation. Finally, BCSC offers training in democratic
citizenship and provides opportunities for leadership training.
BCSC is governed by four elected officers and an appointed executive
board which meets at least six times a year. The legislative body, known
as the general assembly, is comprised of students from the fifty Baltimore
County Public Schools actively involved in student council. The general
assembly meets six times a year at which time legislation dealing with
youth-oriented issues is debated and voted upon. Throughout the school
year, representatives of the executive board lobby at local, state and
federal levels of government on behalf of the Baltimore County Student
Councils.
