Halstead Academy is a magnet school with a focus on the arts and sciences to strengthen reading and critical thinking skills. We use visual arts to build our students’ ability to decode text and to then react to the printed word on a critical level. We use investigative science in order to strengthen our students’ observation skills and develop their ability to react to and use data in new ways. Our teachers also use technology, such as Palm Pilots and laptop computers, to enhance instruction and meet the varied needs of our students. Halstead Academy is characterized by a nurturing learning environment with an emphasis on data monitoring to ensure that all students demonstrate progress in reading, math, science, and social studies. We have an extensive support staff including resource teachers, instructional assistants, a reading specialist, a GT facilitator, and an instructional coach to make sure that all students are challenged on a daily basis.
