Twenty-two Baltimore County schools were recognized as Exemplar PBIS Schools on July 17 by the Maryland State Department of Education. In all, 70 BCPS schools use PBIS, a positive planning process that creates and sustains safe school environments conducive to learning and achievement. National and International

Perry Hall High School received a national “Promising Practices” Award from the Character Education Partnership at the 15th Annual National Forum on Character Education, held October 17-19 in Arlington, Virginia. The school was honored for CARDS (Character Analysis and Resiliency Development Seminars), an after-school program where students are encouraged to identify negative character traits that contribute to unconstructive behavior/choices and to learn alternatives in response to life's stressors. The program was developed by Perry Hall English teacher Martha Bingaman. Perry Hall Assistant Principal Kathleen Watkins notes, “Most of our students have signed pledges to uphold our four cornerstones, which are respect, responsibility, integrity and civility.  Ms. Bingaman’s CARDS program is one of the tools that we offer to help our students honor their pledges.” The award to Perry Hall was one of 153 awards presented to more than 130 schools and districts from around the United States as well as from Canada and Mexico. All winning practices will be featured in CEP’s annual National Schools of Character publication and on the CEP Web site.
