The Counselors’ Corner

We invite you to browse the updated pages of our newly website. There are many resources available to help students and their parent/guardians. You can find information on graduation requirements, coach class schedules, SAT/ACT, the college and career planning process and much more. We will continue to update the website in the coming months. Check it out!

College Entrance Exams

Students, can you picture yourself throwing a Frisbee on the quad after acing your Psychology 101 exam… or on a midnight pizza run after your study group in the campus library? If you’re dreaming of college, remember that to apply to most four-year colleges, you must take a college entrance exam like the SAT or ACT.

SENIORS – Stay on top of college application deadlines!  Remember that you must give two full weeks notice to the School Counseling Office for transcripts, counselor reports, and recommendation letters. Friday, NOVEMBER 7 is the deadline for requesting materials for any priority December 1 deadlines. For regular college admissions deadlines, you must submit your requests by DECEMBER 5 to ensure delivery prior to the winter break.

Helpful Events

Overwhelmed about how to pay for college? Wondering what exactly the FAFSA form is? Come to Financial Night, 6-8pm on December 9 in the senior cafeteria! This event is a must-attend opportunity for seniors (and interested juniors) and their families to learn about the many options for paying for college. College financial aid representatives will be on hand with the counselors to help answer any and all questions.

During American Education Week, the PHS Counseling Office will also host “Breakfast with the Counselors” 8-9am on Wednesday, November 19. This free breakfast event will service as a kick-off to a series of roundtable discussions intended to provide PHS family members with information needed to help their students to be successful. Please contact Mrs. Jennifer Allen at jallen5@bcps.org with your suggestions for topics of discussion and to register for this free event. Stay tuned for more information, and we look forward to seeing you at these events!

Important Graduation Requirement

Parkville students - don't forget that one of your graduation requirements is to earn 75 Student Service Learning Hours. Look at your report card when you receive it on November 17th to determine whether you have met this requirement.  If not listed as “met,” you may pick up the Student Service Learning forms in the School Counseling Office. Give your completed forms to the Counseling Office secretary, Mrs. Gast, as you complete service projects.  Mrs. Gast will make sure your hours are recorded.

Scholarship Binder and Resource Library

The School Counseling Office has created two comprehensive binders of scholarship information and applications that are now available to PHS students. These binders can be found in the School Counseling Office and the school library. The binders are available before and after school, during a student’s lunch period, and with a scheduled appointment. CHECK OFTEN – the binders are constantly updated! By appointment, students may also browse the “college library” across from the School Counseling Office.

Operation Joy

As the holiday season approaches, our thoughts turn to bringing joy to the homeless residents of our county. Baltimore County has a number of Homeless Shelters, whose families and children need our help. There are women (plus their children) as well as men (over 18) who need our support. The shelters provide housing for approximately 320 men, women, and families.  Operation Joy is a way for you to help the less fortunate by providing “Joy with Holiday Surprises.”  We are requesting gifts be placed in gift bags, rather than boxes. Please indicate the gender and age of the intended recipient and deliver to the School Counseling Office no later than Monday, November 24.

A Message From Our Principal, Stephen Edgar

Dear Parents,

Greetings! As common sense would tell us, there is a strong connection between student attendance and the dropout rate for high school students throughout our nation. In a publication by the National High School Center at the American Institutes for Research entitled Approaches to Dropout Prevention: Heeding Early Warning Signs with Appropriate Interventions, research tells us that there are three important indicators of at-risk ninth graders that can predict whether a student will graduate high school or not. They are that the young person:

  • Attended school less than 70 percent of the time,
  • Earned fewer than two credits, and/or
  • Were not promoted to 10th grade on time.

Furthermore, this research clearly tells us that “schools can now predict early on which students are most likely to drop out starting in grade six” and that high schools can identify at risk students as early as the end of the first quarter in grade nine. Since the first quarter just ended, parents can use the indicators that we use to determine the future success of their child. Parents when you get your son or daughter’s report card on Monday, November 17th look for these items:

  • How many times was your son or daughter absent or late to school?
  • How many classes did he or she pass?
  • Did your son or daughter pass the HSA’s (a new requirement for graduation starting for the class of 2009)?

Naturally, Parkville High School is taking measures to identify these students as early as possible and developing specific strategies to help them. For example, the school has started an Attendance Committee, overseen by Mr. Rusty Valentine, as a way to help students with attendance issues. I am proud to say that to date our overall attendance rate has been 94.19%. However, please know that in past years for the second and third quarters these numbers have dipped below 94%, the percent given by the state for a satisfactory attendance rating. Once again, you can do your part by making sure that your son or daughter attends school regularly. Without a doubt, given the difficult economic times in which we live, it has become more critical than ever that all of our students graduate from high school.  In 2004 about 1.3 million students did not graduate from United States high schools, costing more that $325 billion in lost wages, taxes and productivity and the more than 12 million students who will drop out over the next decade will cost our nation about $3 trillion (Alliance for Excellent Education, 2007). All of us – parents, teachers and administrators – want to make sure that none of these students are young men and women who attend Parkville High School…

Most sincerely,
Stephen A. Edgar
Principal

Dear Parents, Students, Teachers, Staff and Community members:

You may ask why I specifically address so many in the opening of this letter?  The reason is that everyone noted is an integral part of the Parkville High School family and yes, we are a family!  We are a unit helping and working together to raise responsible and respectful young adults.  This is a big task for any one of us to take on- but as a group we can manage this task together.  Working together as a group  for a common activity or toward a common goal- a “team”.  The goal is the best education for our children in the public school system.   Common goals of the PTSA are:

  • To support and speak on behalf of children and youth in schools, in the community, and before government bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting our children
  • To assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children
  • To encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools

We know that every moment in the classroom is another opportunity for our children to gain knowledge, enhance skills, discover talents and deepen their understanding, invent new solutions and express new ideas.  We also know that the involvement of concerned parents enriches the learning experience for our students and facilitates the effectiveness of our teachers and staff.

The month of November is a time for change:  we elect a new President of the United States, we change the clocks , and the leaves are changing to bring us a new season.
I am asking you, as parent, to CHANGE!  Please change your thoughts about the level of involvement that you have committed to your child and Parkville High School.  There are over 1,600 students at Parkville High this 2008-2009 school year-

  1. 12% of  parents have joined the PTSA.
  2. 65% of the Teachers and staff have joined the PTSA
  3. 2% of parents have agreed to volunteer hours to the PTSA efforts

The only way that we can move forward is to have others join the TEAM- I am asking each parent to please join the PTSA, volunteer 3 hours of your time and get involved with your child’s school activities- together we can create a WINNING TEAM!

As always, you can contact me via email:  Sgordon0210@yahoo.com

Have a safe and peaceful Thanksgiving Holiday

Sincerely,
Suzette Gordon
President , PTSA
