school.
High school teachers will meet to review the Advanced
Placement results, view sample BCPS portfolios
and discuss AP portfolio development strategies.
All teachers will able to tour the museum. Registration
for transportation and lunch choices will be posted
soon.

Congratulations to the art teachers and students
of Perry Hall Middle School for their wonderful GT
Art Exhibit.
Congratulation to Parkville High’s
National Art Honor Society! Their
work was chosen to be part of the Gwynn Falls Trail “Art
on the Trail” installation art exhibit. The
opening celebration and Family Day is Saturday,
June 2. The installation will be on display
until September 2. Thank you to the Parkville
High NAHS Sponsors, Anne Talman and Jim Hesser,
for all of their work with this project.
Congratulations to the art students at Parkville
Middle School:
As a connection to the study of Africa in 7th
grade World Cultures, art students explored Adinkra
cloth and the symbols found in Adinkra designs. Students
designed symbols of their own that expressed
messages of hope and care to local victims
of fires, floods, and other natural disasters. They
used block printing techniques and silk screening
ink to print the symbols on fabric. The fabric
pieces were combined to make quilts that were donated
to Red Cross Disaster Relief Services.
The exhibit “Portrait Photographs and Artist
Books” is on display at UMBC May 3 – June
1, 2007. It features work by students from
Parkville, Catonsville, and Lansdowne High Schools. The
exhibition is an outreach program organized by the
Center for Art, Design and Visual culture, UMBC.
Congratulations to the Parkville High School National
Art Honor Society for hosting a very successful “Chair-ity” May
3, 2007. Students, alumni, teachers and other
local artists created artful chairs to benefit the
PHS art scholarship fund.
Congratulations to our students whose work was selected
to represent Baltimore County Public Schools at the
Achievement Initiative for Maryland Minority Students
Awards Event. This Excellence Awards Event

Prize winner of the Newton Marasco Foundation’s
GreenFocus photography contest. This environment
still photography contest is for high school students
in the state of Maryland. The Newton Marasco
Foundation and its partners, the Maryland State Department
of Education and the Maryland Department of the Environment
have created the contest to use the art of photography
to raise community awareness and foster the environmental

the Newton Marasco Foundation.

grades 9 – 12 in the MICCA (Maryland Instructional
Computers Coordinators Association) Student Graphic
Arts Contest. The artwork will be displayed
at the MICCA Conference held at the Baltimore Convention

Towson High School looked to the Art Department
in order to make their mission statements come alive
for their students. Students’ drawings,
paintings, digital images and photographs were used
to illustrate the mission statements that were written
for the AFG process. Graphic Design students
added the text to create large black and white posters
which are now displayed throughout the school.
Congratulations to Allison H, a graduate of Franklin
High School. Allison is a Scholastic Art Award
recipient 2006, and her work is featured in School
Arts magazine, April, 2007.
“If you can, then you can teach, you can change
the world” a quote from Audrey Flack. Several
Baltimore County Art teachers attended the 2007 National
Art Educators Association Conference in New York
City March 13-18. The conference was an excellent
opportunity for professional development. Two
of the keynote speakers were Daniel Pink, author “A
Whole New Mind” and Audrey Flack, painter/sculptor. We
were honored to have our teachers present some of
their outstanding practices and we were equally proud
to see Ann Summerson recognized nationally as the
National Junior Art Honor Society Sponsor of the
Year.
Congratulations
to the art students at Orems Elementary. Under
the direction of their visual art teacher, Grace
Hulse, they created beautiful mosaic murals for their
classroom. Third and fifth grade students
each created a garden element (flower, critter, insect)
from clay. After glazing and firing they selected
a spot for it on the wood background. Broken
ceramic tiles donated from a tile store were used
to fill in the background. Fifth grade students
came in after school to complete the mural. The mural
was attached to the wall behind the art room sink
and counter and grouted.
Congratulations to the Towson High School National
Art Honor Society for hosting their Fourteenth Annual
Edible Art Exhibit. This exhibit has
become a huge community event with over one hundred

the guests “EAT THE ART!”

using digital photography manipulated in Adobe Photoshop
to influence and plan their final charcoal drawings. These
wonderful works can be seen throughout the calendar.
