Student artist, Amy Q. stated, “I selected the raptor red-tailed
hawk, and my teacher selected the cactus on which
to mount it. We first made open pinch pots, then we added the
head and tail. After the teacher set it on the cactus, we added
the wings. We made all the parts separately before putting them
together. My teacher fired the sculpture at cone 05 in an electric
kiln, and then we painted it with velvet underglazes. Then we
stuck copper wire into the cactus holes for needles. When the
sculpture came out of the glaze firing, the colors weren’t
exactly what we had expected, but there was greater contrast.
So we were pleased.”

Students at Perry Hall Middle School collected
donations of time, fabric, books, and money in order to send
over 200 "Homemade Hugs" to children who have lost
their homes by Hurricane Katrina. Parents, teachers, and students
worked together to prepare materials. The students worked collaboratively
in order to make children's blankets, each folded with a book
and personal message on a book mark. Students developed an understanding
of ways in which their actions can help others.
One seventh grade student, Galen, wrote the following
poem on his personalized book mark:
Here's a blanket
