West Towson Elementary recently received visits from The Maryland Zoomobile to each fifth grade art class. Students learned about various animals from the Maryland watershed including a Screech Owl named Pellet, a Skunk named Pepe, “Candy” the Corn Snake, and “Raphael”, the Box Turtle.
Children watched the animals in awe and proceeded to hone their observational skills as they rotated through stations to draw each bird, reptile, and mammal “up close and personal” from the Chesapeake region.May 7, 2012 Carver Center for Arts and Technology's Chapter of the National Art Honor Society traveled to Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children's Center to deliver decorated boxes filled with art supplies to the Child Life Center.

Many BCPS visual arts students and their families attended Project: Quality Time at The Walters Art Museum on Saturday, April 21, 2012.
The Office of Visual Arts worked in collaboration with The Walters Art Museum to host our fourth Project: Quality Time. The event encourages parents/guardians and children to spend time together in an art-inspired environment. Families are pulled in so many different directions now and this program fosters and promotes family togetherness. Through art, families can get to know each other's thoughts and opinions. The children may also expand their communication skills through a discussion about the artworks. This activity may foster language development as the children use art vocabulary and concepts related to The WAM collection. Families explored the galleries and participated in the "Ancient Americas Family Festival."

Congratulations to Ms. Dingle, her students, and Staff at Winfield for their adventures in “Read Across America!!” Specials thank to their Visual Arts teacher, Ms. Merkle, for helping to make the lobby look like a scene from The Lorax.

Under the direction of visual arts teacher, Grace Hulse, fourth graders at Orems Elementary have completed the We are Middle River Project. It will be on display at the Glenn L. Martin Aviation Museum later this month. The students will have their fabric collages inspired by the history of Martin Aviation and Middle River in the gallery, as well as some drawings they did for the museum when they were 2nd graders. They will also have their Blurb book on display with some copies for sale. You can preview the book at this link: http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3005748
The opening for this show will be March 24, Maryland History Day. The museum opens at 11am. There will be lots to see and do including: The real Rosies will be there for Women's History Month, author Vince Gisriel, Jr will be there for National Reading Month to sign his books and at 12:30pm, for Maryland History Day, we will present the musical "Rosie" that tells the Rosie the Riveter story.
Admission to the museum is $3 for adults and $1 for kids.
The students did a fantastic job on this project and I hope that you can all join us to celebrate their accomplishments.

The art department of Sparrows Point High School is very excited to announce their second annual Trashy Fashion Show, to be held in the school auditorium on March 23, 2012, at 7 pm. Tickets will be on sale at the door: $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for students. Last year’s event was a huge success, with more than 60 male and female student designers and models performing for a sold-out crowd. After the show, the students' work went on display at the Baltimore Museum of Art to rave reviews.
The premise of Trashy Fashion is that all garments must be created using a minimum of 75% recyclable materials. Preparation started months before the show. Students first research the environmental impact of the modern fashion industry then develop design concepts aimed at minimizing, sometimes even eliminating, these negative effects. While conducting research, students spend extra time after school learning to sew and work with non-traditional materials. It is a fun, exhausting and rewarding process. On the runway, students are competing for the top prize; but in the months leading up to the big event, they are working as a team, developing new skills and ideas.
One of the students won a college scholarship for her design. The Trashy Fashion Show last year was so successful and inspiring that the teacher in charge of the program, Art Department Chairman Vicki Ali, has been asked to present the idea at the National Art Educator’s Convention this March in New York City--quite a prestigious recognition of the innovative program.
For more information about the event, media questions may also be directed to Vicki Ali at vali@bcps.org<mailto:vali@bcps.org>.Congratulations to students who have their artwork on display in the ESS Third Floor Gallery. The artwork will be on display through May, 2012.

Life is a Journey Through Time: Works of Frans Lanting
A student art exhibition inspired by nature, in conjunction with the BSO

Students from Baltimore County Publics schools joined with students from Anne Arundel County Schools to exhibit works inspired by nature and the photographic works of Fans Lanting.
Special thanks to the team at Pikesville Middle for working together as a school to develop arts integrated lessons to inspire student learning (pictured with Frans Lanting and Maestro Marin Alsop).
Thanks to James Gordon, Parkville High (pictured with his teacher Ryan Twenty), for the invitation art.
Dear friends of Baltimore Symphony Orchestra: the opening of the Student Art Exhibit, yesterday, was beyond everyone’s expectation and so completely captivated Frans Lanting and Marin Alsop. It was also a wonderful example of what teamwork and inspiration can accomplish. Please accept my sincere gratitude to each of you for all that you did to make this event happen. The quality of the work was outstanding – Marin and Franz were talking about it today with students from Johns Hopkins. Please extend our sincere thanks to all of the students and teachers who participated in this project.
If this can be accomplished, it is rather exciting to think of what else we might do that is creative and innovative to engage our children. I look forward to working with you again.

Happy Holidays from Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts' National Art Honor Society
The National Art Honor Society is taking part in the 2011 Festival of Trees gingerbread house contest to support Kennedy Krieger. The students worked hard over the past week to complete their vision of Times Square in a snow globe (inspired by their fall NYC field trip).
