Cromwell
Valley Elementary takes part in Tree Love
This banner
concept was lead by a Baltimore based graphic designer,
and completed by a group of 3rd grade students from
Cromwell Valley under the direction of Deb Rogers
to express their love of trees.
The adults provided a format
and materials for the children and lead them
through a conceptual conversation culminating
in a work session in which abstract paintings
were created. The students’ ideas and favorite
things about trees were shared: “Trees
are awesome!” “Trees give us air.” “Sometimes
I climb a tree and rest.” This is a picture
of a tree with the air all around it.
The designer created the tree
and background then scanned and masked the students
artwork to form the leaves.
This 3rd grade class had a great
time and are excited to share their “voice” for
green mindedness and improvements in Baltimore

Congratulations to all of the 4th and 5th grade
students at Orems Elementary who worked on "Oh
Say Can You See Our Maryland". The students
had the opportunity to work with guest artist, Amanda
Pellerin, and their art teacher Grace Hulse to create
this beautiful mosaic depicting Our Maryland.
The artwork was display at The Walter's Art Museum
on Saturday April 12, 2008. It will now find a permanent
home in the lobby at Orems Elementary.
Special Thanks to The Honorable County
Executive Jim Smith and the members of his committee
for funding the project through The Commission on
Arts and Science.
Windsor Mill Middle School's artwork has been on
display since the beginning of March at Randallstown
Library. Two students (Hydiea and Amber) from
the school started the dialog between Ms.Lori Gunether
of Randallstown Library and the art teachers of WMMS
(Ms.Stephanie Bylkas and Ms.Laura Dutton) when they
noticed how blank the walls at the library were. On
Thursday April 3rd the Library held a reception to
congratulate the students whose artwork was selected
for display.

Congratulations to the art students at Orems Elementary
and their teacher, Ms. Grace Hulse. For the
past two months selected 4th and 5th grade students
worked on a special project with visiting artist,
Amanda Pellerin. The children created an amazing
mural map of Maryland. The map will be on display
at The Walters Art Museum for the Free Family Festival
on April 12 in conjunction with the exhibit, “Maps: Finding
Our Place in the World.”

Congratulations to Justine B., Parkville Middle School for being selected as a Gold Key Winner in the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Only 650 works out of over 6,000 submissions were given this distinction. Scholastics has only recently opened this national competition to 7th and 8th graders, and this is the first time a BCPS middle school has participated. One of the primary goals of the Alliance’s efforts on behalf of these younger teenagers is to spark creative talent at an early age, to put a young artist on a creative path to develop an authentic voice and creative capacity for the future.

On Sunday, March 2, 2008, Baltimore County Publics
Schools joined with our partners at the Walters
Art Museum to kick off the celebration of Youth
Art Month. Students, parents, teachers and community
gathered to celebrate "Art in Our Schools".
The event was well attended as these young artists
were recognized for their talents.
Art education develops self-esteem, appreciation
of the work of others, self-expression, cooperation
with others, and critical thinking skills, skills
vital to the success of our future leaders ---
our children.
In "The Nation and the Arts," a Presidential
briefing paper prepared by the Independent Committee
on Arts Policy, it was stated:
"Well-developed programs of making and studying
art serve many functions. They help students better
articulate their perceptions and shape coherent
responses to their experiences. When children learn
to appreciate form and color...when they learn
the importance of fashioning their own images of
the world around them, they achieve greater discipline
and self confidence. Further, the arts have extrinsic
public value as they are increasingly important
to this nation's economy."

for the community to enjoy. The
students are earning community service credit by
taking part in this project.
Congratulations to three of our art teachers featured
in the January, 2008
Maryland Family Magazine: Kaytee
Lurz, Middlesex Elementary; Jackie Morgan, Pine Grove

Good Food... Good Friends... Good Cause!
Many thanks to all who attended the "Beach
Party", sponsored by the RATS (retired Art Teachers)
on Saturday, February 9, 2008. The event was held
to benefit The Summer Art Enrichment Camp. We also
want to thank all who donated items for the silent
auction.
Congratulations to Grace Hulse from Orems Elementary
School for successfully completing National Board
Certification. Ms. Hulse is our first elementary
art teacher to become a National Board Certified
Teacher. National Board Certification is an
extremely rigorous process and is the highest level
of professional development offered to our teachers
at a national level.
While Ms. Hulse is our first elementary
art teacher to become a NBCT, Linda McConaughy became
our first secondary art NBCT ten years ago. Last year
she went through the recertification process and
was again successful. Ms. McConaughy teaches at Parkville
Middle School. Congratulations to both for
offering our students such incredible art programs!
Congratulations to the
ceramic students from Patapsco High and Center for
the Arts. Under the direction of Ms. Liberty
Grayek, they used their artistic skills to create
and contribute the decorations on four Christmas
trees for the Festival of Lights, now on display
at the Cow Palace at the Timonium Fairgrounds. Local
groups/businesses decorate trees, wreaths, and gingerbread
houses for this sale; proceeds go to the Kennedy
Kreiger Institute. Patapsco students learned
they can use their artistic talents to contribute
to the well being of children less fortunate than
themselves.

Sunday, October 21, 2007 was the Baltimore County
Public Schools “Project: Quality Time” at
the Baltimore Museum of Art. BCPS elementary
students were invited to come together for quality
time with family, friends, teachers and some great
works of art. Students sketched landscapes,
recorded their responses to artworks, did a scavenger
hunt finding different types of artworks, and other
activities in a workbook prepared by the Visual Arts
Office in collaboration with the Baltimore Museum
of Art. We hope this will become an annual
event.

NAHS students from Towson High and Catonsville High
volunteered to be docents for the day.

Families discussed works of art

as they made their way through the museum.
