Winand News!

For as long as she could remember, Fiona M. Coulter wanted to be an art teacher. Her passion for art comes naturally as her father, Dr. Bernard McGibbon, is an artist as well as a retired physician. From a young age she was expressing her creative side with drawing and painting. In one instance she had a broken leg and decided the white plaster cast was not pretty so she painted it! Mrs. Coulter pursued art in college and had several art careers including muralist, designer in a paint studio and ceramic artist. After raising her three sons she returned to school to earn a Master’s in Education in Teaching.
Born and educated in London, England, Dr. McGibbon immigrated to the U.S. in 1966 to pursue training in plastic surgery. Later appointed to the teaching staff at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Hospital and as the Chief of Plastic Surgery at GBMC. He retired in 2002 to spend full-time as a professional artist. Over the years he has studied at the Schuler School in Baltimore, as well as with Daniel Greene, renowned portrait painter, and with other well-known artists in the fields of oil and watercolor. He has won awards for his work in both mediums. He is a Signature member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society, Portrait Society of America, Salmagundi Club of New York, MD Plein-Air Painters, Oil Painters of America, and Charcoal Club of Baltimore.

Fourth grade Visual Arts students from Pinewood Elementary School, with their teacher, Sheldon Lebowitz, made a presentation at the BCPS Principals’ Meeting on March 20th. They presented their arts integration unit of study that featured personal sculptures of mythological figures. Students researched their figures in the library and computer lab and then created personal interpretations of their findings in art class. This was a collaborative activity for both students and teachers that documented the richness and rigor of interdisciplinary activities. Congratulations!

Saturday, March 2 , Pine Grove Middle School's Truffula Tree inspired readers and listeners at a Read Across America day event hosted by Towsontown Center. Students from the CALS program helped build the tree from which hung "30 quotes from Dr.Seuss that could change your life". It was a fun day of guest readers, prizes, photos and more presented by the Teachers Association of Baltimore County (TABCO). The National Education Association 's annual "Read Across America" day celebrates the importance of reading and the birthday of beloved author-illustrator Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel). BCPS Superintendent Dr. Dance, MSEA V.P. Cheryl Bost, Senator James Brochin, and many others were guest readers.

Congratulations to Pine Grove Middle School artists who created book bags for kindergarten students at the Chatsworth School.
Students in Mrs. Morgan’s grade 7 classes designed and hand painted book bags based on scenes from famous children’s books. As a special gift each book bag included the book that inspired the design. The students at Pine Grove Middle wanted to share their childhood books with the kindergarten students in order to get them excited about reading and foster a life-long appreciation of books . Each book bag design was carefully sketched, then painted with acrylic paints on fabric. After assembling the bag, student artists designed matching gift tags and placed the book inside. Grade 7 student, Casey B., said that “Making the bags took a long time and was hard work, but seeing the kids with the bags was a good reward. It was definitely worth the work”. Students in the kindergarten classes are making thank you cards to send to the seventh grade students in response to the book bags.

Congratulations to Catonsville High’s National Art Honor Society! NAHS members, under the direction of art teacher, Windy Spiridigliozzi, are making shell impressed clay pendants after learning about the “Shells for NJ Shores” Hurricane Sandy Relief fund. They have made 200 so far and are selling them in their front office…such a great gift for the holidays! A $5 donation is suggested for each and 100% of the purchase will be donated toward the rebuilding efforts post-Hurricane Sandy. Students are able to use their artistic skills to benefit others that were so devastated in the storm.

Congratulations to Lilah Sidle, Grade 6, at Cockeysville Middle School. Lilah’s design was selected for one of the “Miracle Ties” at Jos A Banks. Three Carver Center students win gold medals at national ACT-SO competition

TOWSON, MD— Three George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology students earned gold medals in visual arts categories at the 34th Annual NAACP Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) competition, held July 5-8, 2012, in Houston, Texas.
Kevin Cobb of Overlea won in painting, Dylan Guest of Woodlawn won in sculpture, and Kylia Jackson of Owings Mills won in photography. Cobb and Guest, 2012 Carver Center graduates, will both enter Maryland Institute College of Art in the fall. Jackson is a junior at Carver Center. As national gold medalists, each received an iPad from State Farm Insurance and a $3,000 award.
Designed to raise and celebrate the academic and cultural achievement of African American high school students, ACT-SO includes 26 categories of mentoring and competition in the sciences, humanities, business, and performing and visual arts. The 700 participants in national competition were all gold medalists at local and regional levels.
“The level of talent at the national competition is fierce,” said Marietta English, chair of Baltimore County Chapter of ACT-SO. “Qualifying to participate at this level is already impressive. The recognition young people receive from being there and the connections they make are priceless. Walking away with a gold medal proves that you are at the top of your field. The young people from Baltimore County made us proud.”
Amarachi Korie of Owings Mills and Tres McMichael of Pikesville, both also Carver Center students and local level ACT-SO gold medalists, had featured roles at the national competition. Korie, a Carver Center junior, was a highlighted dancer in the event’s closing awards ceremony, and McMichael, a Carver Center sophomore, was a soloist in the singing of “Lift Every Voice.”
ALUMNI NEWSFLASH: For the past ten years, VSA and Volkswagen Group of America, Inc., have teamed up to recognize and showcase emerging artists with disabilities, ages 16-25, who are living in the United States. This collaboration supports these artists at a critical time when many are deciding whether to pursue the arts as a career. The award validates, and helps finance, that life-defining choice. Every year, fifteen artists are selected for the exhibition and share $60,000 in cash awards generously provided by Volkswagen Group of America, Inc: a $20,000 grand prize, a $10,000 first award, a $6,000 second award, and 12 awards of excellence of $2,000 each.
This year's call for art asked emerging artists to showcase work that illuminates innovative viewpoints on sustainability and contemporary creativity. Beyond its scientific definition, sustainability references notions of responsibility and stewardship of our natural world in all facets of human interaction–from the environmental to the cultural. Sustainability indicates the capacity to endure.
Dylan Guest (VA, 2012) is the grand prize winner ($20,000) in this year’s competition. Dylan's piece entitled "Holding His Own" will be featured in an exhibition taking place at the Smithsonian Institution’s S. Dillon Ripley Center in Washington, D.C., from September 2012 to January 2013 and may travel nationally to additional venues. Awardees will be honored at an opening reception on Capitol Hill.
