The Department of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
(STEM) encompasses the offices of Science PreK-12, Mathematics
PreK-12, Career and Technology Education, Information Technology,
Library Information Services, and the Department of Student Support
Services. The department is responsible for:
- Creating the vision
for STEM education through collaborations and partnerships with
higher education, business, and industry;
- Promoting the philosophy
of STEM education throughout BCPS;
- Designing curricula to
implement the STEM vision and philosophy;
- Selecting equipment
and resources, including print, digital, and non-print materials,
to implement the written STEM curricula;Assessing student performance
on the STEM curricula; and
- Providing high quality
professional development to ensure successful implementation
of the STEM curricula.
- Providing oversight of
the efforts that focus upon students' health, social, value/character,
emotional, and behavioral development in reducing barriers to
learning which enable all students to achieve.
Goals for 2007-2008
- To develop a philosophy
of STEM and promote that philosophy throughout BCPS;
- To remain
a strong support to schools and offices in all endeavors related
to student achievement of the Indicators in the Blueprint for
Progress.
- To provide the leadership
and support for the integration of science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics to improve student achievement and teacher productivity.
- To
continue successful implementation of the Chesapeake High STEM
cluster grant;
- To provide direct service
to schools, and conduct professional development for administrators
and teachers to support the successful implementation of curriculum.
- To collaborate with all BCPS curricular offices to provide
a cohesive instructional program designed to meet the needs of
all children.
- To provide leadership
and support to schools and offices in the development and implementation
of e-Learning initiatives.
- To continue to refine
alignment of all curricula with the Maryland Voluntary State
Curriculum and Core Learning Goals.
- To provides oversight
in the following areas: alternative programs, summer school,
and dropout prevention, pupil personnel services including school
social work, guidance and counseling, health services, psychological
services, and safe and drug-free schools.
- To support and improve
student achievement and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in the
area of mathematics for all students through systemic collaboration.
- To develop a plan to assist schools that are not making AYP,
or in danger of not making AYP in the area of mathematics.
- To
develop a plan to assist students who do not pass the required
high school assessments in the areas of Algebra I and biology.
- To
research and implement technological trends and best practices
in 21st century learning and instructional environments.
