10,000 Steps Toward Wellness

September 26th – November 20th

Walking is so much more than a means of getting from Point A to Point B.  It’s a simple physical activity that can boost your heart health and help you live longer.  Research has even shown that walking for as little as 30 minutes a day can have these added benefits:

  • Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease
  • Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
  • Improve blood lipid profile
  • Maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity
  • Enhance mental well-being
  • Reduce the risk of osteoporosis
  • Reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer
  • Reduce the risk of non-insulin dependant (Type 2) diabetes

It is recommended that adults walk 10,000 steps per day.  How far is 10,000 steps anyway?  The average person's stride length is approximately 2.5 feet long.  That means it takes just over 2,000 steps to walk one mile, and 10,000 steps is close to 5 miles.

Our 10,000 Steps Toward Wellness Program is an 8-week individual program that encourages people to increase their steps to 10,000 a day.  It is pedometer based.  If 10,000 steps a day seems a bit out of your reach, don’t get discouraged – WALK!  The program is designed to reward increased walking.

Please note that as with all physical activity programs, it is always recommended that you consult with your physician before beginning an exercise program.  Please see attached safety tips.
