Next Generation Science Standards

Quality science education is based on standards that are rich in content and practice, with aligned curricula, pedagogy, assessment, and teacher preparation and development. It has been nearly 15 years since the National Research Council and the American Association for Advancement in Science produced the seminal documents on which most state standards are based. Since that time, major advances in science and our understanding of how students learn science have taken place and need to be reflected in state standards. The time is right to forge Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)

Through a collaborative, state-led process managed by Achieve, new K–12 science standards have been developed that are rich in content and practice, arranged in a coherent manner across disciplines and grades to provide all students an internationally benchmarked science education. The NGSS is based on the Framework for K–12 Science Education developed by the National Research Council.

Maryland became the fourth state to adopt the Next Generation Science Standards on June 25, 2013. The  Maryland State Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt the standards, which were released in April after two years in development. The aim of the new standards are to spell out practices and content that all K-12 students should know to be college-and-career ready after high school. Full implementation in public schools in Maryland is expected to be complete in time for the 2017-18 school year. The Baltimore County Office of Science PreK-12 is already reviewing the new standards and is working on incorporating the new standards in our curriculum so that all science courses will be aligned to the NGSS by the 2017-2018 school year.
