How
to Conduct an Interview
People are another great resource. Think
about conducting an interview with someone who is knowledgeable about
the topic you are researching. Here are some tips.
When you ask for an
interview:
Be polite. Introduce yourself and your project.
Request a time for the interview that is convenient for the
person you are interviewing.
Explain the kind of information you will need and how you will
use it.
For the interview:
Write specific questions in advance. If you don’t know what to
ask, get more background information, before the interview.
Start and end the interview on time.
Ask for permission to tape record the interview.
Finish by thanking the person for their time.
Follow up with a written thank you note.
You can get great information by mail (especially from organizations
in the government). Here are some tips on writing away for information
for your research.
Follow the tips for interviewing (above), plus:
For your safety, use the school’s address or your teacher’s
email address.
Explain what you already know (Adults want to know you have done
some work up front).
