Goal
To offer new teachers personal and professional support during their first and second year of teaching
1. To improve student achievement by providing new teachers with support in planning and instruction.
2. To provide new teachers with support in developing classroom procedures to ensure successful classroom management.
3. To familiarize new teachers with the personnel, policies and procedures, culture, and norms of both the local and the larger county school system.
4. To provide a guide to the various resources available in Baltimore County Public Schools.
Overview of the Program
Peer Facilitators/Coaches are experienced classroom teachers who work with non-tenured teachers to provide support in instruction, planning, and classroom management. They may be identified by area directors and principals or self-select to participate in the Peer Facilitator/Coach Pool.
Peer Facilitators/Coaches receive training and may earn inservice credit for their work with new teachers. They document their support in comprehensive journals, attend area meetings to exchange ideas, and compile a portfolio of activities and materials that improve effectiveness and student achievement.
Peer Facilitators/Coaches may be assigned within their building or may travel to another school to support a new teacher. Release time is provided at the discretion of the building administrator. Most Peer Facilitators/Coaches work with new teachers after school and on weekends.
This program is co-sponsored by the Teachers Association of Baltimore County and the Department of Professional Development.
