Overview of Classification
The Classification Section of the Office of Personnel
Services is responsible for the classification of all positions
in the Baltimore County Public Schools system. Classification is
the systematic process of analyzing positions and grouping similar
positions together under a common title based upon an evaluation
of their duties, responsibilities, qualifications, and level of
difficulty of work.
Positions sufficiently alike in these respects are placed in the
same class, and thus ultimately in the same pay grade.
The Classification Section will accept requests to review the classification
of a position under the following circumstances:
- When an approved departmental reorganization has affected the duties and responsibilities of a position.
- When a new, vacant position has been created or when an existing vacant position has been
reassigned.
- When the duties of an occupied
position have changed over time.
Requests to review vacant positions and those affected by reorganization
are accepted throughout the year.
Occupied positions are reviewed twice yearly, spring and fall.
Requests for the fall review must be received by October 31 and
for the spring review by May 31.
