Requesting a Classification Review of Your Position

Under recently established procedures, employees in certain classes may request the classification review of their positions. In a classification review, the various elements of a position are analyzed to ensure that the position has been placed in the most appropriate class title.

To request a classification review, an employee completes Part I of a Position Content Questionnaire (PCQ) and submits the form to his or her immediate supervisor. The PCQ elicits information about the position from the employee and departmental management. It is the primary basis for classification decisions.

The Department of Human Resources conducts position classification reviews twice yearly. One period for the review of PCQs is in the fall and the other is in the spring of the year. PCQs, to be considered for the fall review, must be received by the Department of Human Resources by October 31. To be considered in the spring, they must be received by May 31.

Not all requests for classification reviews are granted. When the volume of PCQs received exceeds the Department of Human Resources’ capacity to review them or when fiscal limitations prevent the implementation of classification recommendations, some requests will not be considered. In these cases, the Department of Human Resources will prioritize the requests it has received and make recommendations as to which, if any, of the PCQs shall be reviewed in that period.

Salary adjustments resulting from reclassifications are made in accordance with Superintendent’s Rule 4260. This rule states that if the position’s new class is one grade higher than the class held by the position immediately prior to its reclassification, then the employee will be granted a one-step increase. If the new class is two or more grades higher, the employee will be granted a two-step increase.
