The Office of Classification, in Personnel Services, is part of the Department of Human Resources and is responsible for administering classification and compensation plans that provide for the efficient, equitable, and consistent classification and compensation of employees and the recruitment of qualified applicants. The office also assists with the recruitment of qualified applicants through the development and maintenance of class specifications and job descriptions.

Additionally, the Office of Classification:

  • Receives and reviews requested reclassifications from employees and department heads for individual positions and groups of classes.
  • Conducts job analyses and organizational studies to determine proper classification of positions. 
  • Develops, maintains, and updates class specifications, including essential functions, minimum requirements, retirement system eligibility, and Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) exempt or non-exempt status.
  • Reviews vacancy announcements prior to posting to ensure accuracy of vacancy, duties, responsibilities, and minimum qualifications.
  • Reviews BCPS’ compensation plan on an annual basis to ensure fair and consistent salary practices, within available resources.
  • Consults with administrators on issues regarding office reorganizations and staffing requirements.
