SUBSTITUTE TEACHER APPLICATION PROCEDURES

ALL individuals interested in being employed as a substitute teacher in any Baltimore County Public School must be fingerprinted, undergo a background check and submit the appropriate application. The cost for the fingerprinting and background check is $75; paid by the applicant.  This cost is not reimbursed.

Substitute Position Description

STEP 1:   FINGER PRINTING AND BACKGROUND CHECK

  • Contact the Office of Fingerprinting at 877-467-9215 to schedule an appointment.

Applicants are seen by appointment only, no walk-ins.  For hours of operation and directions visit the following link:

  • Complete the required background check application form and the BCPS release form. These forms can be downloaded from the website at www.bcps.org/offices/human resources/fingerprinting/. If you are unable to access the forms online, they will be provided to you during your appointment.

STEP 2:  COMPLETE APPLICATION (on-line or paper version)

On-Line

  • Go to www.bcps.org/apps/hiring/ and complete an on-line application after you have received your fingerprint card in the mail. Complete the on-line application and press “Continue.” Your next screen will be a confirmation page which contains your application’s confirmation number.
  • Print the confirmation page. 
  • Submit the following paperwork to the address for Temporary Services printed on the confirmation page once you have completed the online application:
    • A photocopy (not the original) of your fingerprint card.  Retain the original copy of your fingerprint card for access and identification when arriving for assignments.
    • A photocopy of the confirmation page.
    • A copy of your high school diploma or GED, or if applicable, a photocopy of your degree (bachelor or higher) or final unofficial transcripts that indicate the degree has been awarded. If you are unable to provide proof of your degree, an original letter from the Registrar’s office stating the date the degree was conferred is acceptable.  

Paper version

  • Pick up a paper application at any Baltimore County Public School, or have one mailed to you by contacting the Office of Temporary Services at 410-887-2174. Complete the application and send the application, a photocopy of your fingerprint card, and verification of completion of high school or, if applicable, a photocopy of your degree to the address on the back of the application.   
  • Substitute records are set up within five business days following receipt of all required documents.

STEP 3:  RECEIVE INFORMATION PACKET

  • Once the documentation is received and accepted, the Office of Temporary Services will mail you a packet of information which will include instructions on how to register with the automated calling system, Substitute Employee Management System (SEMS) so that you can begin to receive calls for substitute teacher assignments. Only substitutes registered in SEMS are eligible for substitute assignments. 

 

CURRENT PAY SCALE FOR SUBSTITUTES

Degreed $82.92 per day Long Term $112.53 per day
Non-degreed $65.15 per day Long Term $ 82.92 per day

(Long term means 10 or more consecutive days in the same assignment)
