Special Education Maryland Approved Alternative Preparation Program (MAAPP)
For the 2010-2011 School Year
(Revised June 2009)
The Baltimore County Public School system (BCPS) is seeking candidates in the core subject fields who would like to teach special education at the elementary or secondary level and who do not meet requirements for teacher certification. These candidates may be eligible to participate in an alternative pathway toward certification through the BCPS/Goucher College Maryland Approved Alternative Preparation Program.
Benefits of the Program
- Fall (2010) employment for those who meet eligibility requirements by April, 2010 and successfully complete course requirements during the summer 2010.

- Courses are graduate level and will be accepted towards a Masters program at Goucher College if candidate chooses to participate.

Minimum Requirements
ELEMENTARY Special Education

- Bachelor’s or higher degree with 36 semester hours or more:
- Science – 6
- Social Studies – 6
- English – 6
- Math – 6
- 12 more from above core areas and/or fine arts and foreign language.
(50% of credits must be taken at same institution of higher education)
- 2.75 GPA in 36 hours
- Qualifying scores on *Praxis I (Reading, Writing, and Mathematics) and *Praxis II (#0014).
Effective April 1, 2008, the following tests are accepted in lieu of Praxis I:
- SAT composite score of 1100 (prior to 4/95, the SAT Score Equivalent is 1000);
- ACT composite score of 24; and
- GRE composite score of 1000.

SECONDARY Special Education

- Bachelor’s degree or higher with 24 semester hours in English, Math, Science, or Social Studies and 6 related hours, for a total of 30 hours. (50% or credits must be taken at same institution of higher education, 12 credits must be upper division coursework, no “D” or lower grades.)
- 2.75 GPA in above area of concentration
- Qualifying scores on *Praxis I (Reading, Writing, and Mathematics) and on Praxis II for the selected area of content: English #0041, Math #0061, Biology #0235, History and Social Studies #0081, etc..

- ACT composite score of 24; and
- GRE composite score of 1000.

Timeline
- Attend the Open House on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 – 7:00 p.m. at Goucher College, Rosenberg Gallery (for registration, email gpedu@goucher.edu or call 410-337-6047).
- An additional MAAPP open house is set for December 9, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Rosenberg Auditorium Gallery. Representatives from Goucher College and BCPS will be available to address questions.
- Directions to the Rosenberg Gallery: Take 695 to Exit 27 A Dulaney Valley Road. Merge into traffic and get into left lane. Make a left at the first light. Make the first left after the pond. On the right side is the Dorsey Center visitors' parking lot. Park on the lot and take the wide set of steps going up to the Dorsey Center Courtyard. The Rosenberg Auditorium Gallery is the first building on the left.
- Submit application, resume’, and transcript(s) by January 2010 to begin program in summer 2010.
- Complete Praxis I and Praxis II (see above). Copies of score reports must be received by April 21 to begin program in summer 2010.
- Following receipt of application documents and references, interviews will be conducted with those who meet eligibility requirements.
- Selection of candidates will occur by May 1, 2010.
- Summer coursework will begin in June 2010.
