Renewal Requirements
Each certificate that Maryland issues has a specified validity period. It is the responsibility of the individual certificate holder to know the renewal requirements of their certificate, to complete the renewal requirements during the validity period of the certificate, and to assure that the Office of Certification has received official documentation to renew the certificate prior to the expiration date. Failure to renew your certificate can result in your salary being frozen on step, an employment status change to long-term substitute(with the loss of benefits), and/or null and void of your employment contract.

If all renewal requirements have been completed and are on file at the Office of Certification, the office will request MSDE to renew your certificate. There is no interaction with MSDE required on your part. MSDE has a processing fee required for the initial issuance of a certificate, renewal of a certificate, and issuance of a new type of certificate. BCPS will deduct the processing fee directly from your paycheck. When this is done, the payroll office will notify you via a message on your paycheck. For certificates that expire on July 1st, the office attempts to renew all certificates prior to the last payroll period in the school year. However, the volume of renewals is of such great numbers that the requests are made throughout the summer. In such cases, the processing fee will be deducted in September.
