Office of Secondary Social Studies
Mission

The Office of Secondary Social Studies supports the Blueprint for Progress and the vision of social studies education by preparing students to be responsible, productive citizens in our democratic, pluralistic society and within a global setting.

The Office of Secondary Social Studies guides the development, implementation, and assessment of social studies instruction; provides professional development for middle and high school social studies teachers; serves as a liaison for the school system and the community; and facilitates extra-curricular programs for students.

Services provided by the Office of Secondary Social Studies include:

  • Development of curriculum guides and syllabi for required and elective social studies courses
  • Development of assessment instruments to measure student achievement and inform instruction
  • Coordination of teacher training programs with colleges, universities, and professional organizations
  • Partnerships with community institutions and governmental agencies to provide services for teachers and students
  • Administration of a one million dollar Teaching American History Grant
  • Implementation of student programs such as Quiz Bowl, Mock Trial, Model Congress, and Model United Nations
