The Office of Social Studies seeks to improve student
achievement in social studies to prepare students to responsible,
productive citizens in our democratic, pluralistic society.
The Office of Social Studies develops Essential Curriculum,
assists teachers in implementing instructional programs,
and provides real-world experiences for students. The office
aligns Baltimore County Essential Curriculum with the Maryland
Voluntary State Curriculum and Core Learning Goals to ensure
a systematic program for all students. We provide content-specific
staff development so that all teachers are trained to implement
programs effectively and to offer courses that set high
standards for all students.
We develop assessment tools such as short cycle assessments,
benchmark assessments, final exams, and test banks for
teacher created tests that will periodically measure
student achievement.
We create instructional activities and provide professional
development to ensure that all students utilize reading
and writing skills effectively as part of their social
studies program.
All of these activities contribute to our overall goal
of graduating students prepared to be active world citizens.
