Science: Earth & Space or Environmental
Students follow a rigorous curriculum covering a wide variety of topics in mathematics and science, as well as thorough study of computer technology. While specific topics and emphasis vary in each of the schools, all students will have the opportunity to take the high school exam in either Earth & Space Science or Environmental Science at the end of their eighth grade year. Students who are successful on the exam will receive high school credit for the selected course.
These programs provide a foundation for students who wish to continue in a high school magnet program in Biomedicine, Finance, Environmental Science, Allied Health, Engineering, or any of the computer-related magnet programs in the county.
Earth & Space Science: Earth science involves students in instructional activities concerning geology, erosive forces, seismic activity, volcanology, oceanography, astronomy, meteorology and geologic time. Activities will include rock and mineral study, refinement of mapping skills, presentation of origins of the universe, investigating earthquakes and volcanoes, catastrophic weather events, ocean currents and tides, space exploration, and recent space technology advancements.
Environmental Science: This course emphasizes a laboratory approach to the study of the environment along with specific case studies. Topics include a required unit on principles of ecology and selected modules on acid rain, Chesapeake Bay, deforestation, endangered species, erosion/siltation, eutrophication, global warming, populations, solid and hazardous waste, and urbanization.
