High School Programs

Environmental Science & Technology

Environmental Science: The Environmental Science programs are intended for science-oriented and environmentally motivated students who plan to attend a four-year college or university. Programs offer opportunities for gifted & talented, advanced placement, and college articulated coursework. Additional science credits, beyond those required by Maryland, are required for graduation from the program. Research and internship opportunities may also be available, depending on the school.

Both schools allow for students to experience field study, discuss and take action on environmental issues, learn about the environment from the perspectives of history, law, and public policy, and to understand the balance between the environment, politics, economics, and culture. Students participate throughout the program in authentic situations as real environmental scientists.

Environmental Technology: Students act as environmental professionals, completing projects in environmental design, planning, monitoring, and conservation. The program emphasizes hands-on experiences and fieldwork by allowing students to participate in a variety of projects such as constructing and monitoring an aquaculture system, wetland restoration, landscaping, composting, and many others. Students become proficient with word processor and spreadsheet software, as well as software specific to the field, such as Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping software used by environmental engineers, planners, and resource managers.
