Prepare Your Working Environment
Activity 7: Prepare Your Workspace
- Get Comfortable!
Make sure that you have a comfortable chair and good lighting, as well as wrist support for both your keyboard and your mouse. For more information on setting up an ergonomically correct workstation, visit the Cornell University Ergonomics Webpage.
- Limit Distractions!
Try to work in a noise-free zone, if possible, or at least limit as much exposure to small group discussions, the telephone, the television, or other distractions as you work.
- Get Support at School!
It is important to speak with your Mentor Teacher, Media Specialist, or School Counselor to discuss concerns you may have about your workspace.
- Get Support at School!
Share your workspace concernswith family members, as well, so you can count on their support when you are in need of it.
- Let Others Know You are Working !
Online courses can be confusing to those who have not experienced them. You need to explain to those working around you that they may "see" you but you may not be "available" to communicate with them while you are completing your online assignments. By talking openly with your classmates, your teachers, and your family about your online responsibilities, you may find that you receive support to help you succeed.

TIP
When will you take your course?
When will you complete your assignments?
Some online learners find that working on their course at the same time each day helps to limit distractions since others around them know that they are busy with tasks and should not be interrupted.
