e-Learning in the Baltimore
County Public Schools
The Office of Instructional Technology (OIT) provides leadership
to schools and offices for e-Learning initiatives. There are
three types of e-Learning initiatives which are presently
available in the Baltimore County Public Schools:
OIT has also designed several orientation resources for new
online learners. Learn more about the Orientation
Resources.
Online Courses for Students
Online courses can be used by Baltimore County to:
- expand the range of courses and opportunities offered
to students;
- allow students to take a course when there are too few
students who need a certain course to be able to assign
a teacher to teach that course;
- provide courses for students who have schedules that
prevent them from taking a course when it is offered; and
- provide equity for students who cannot access courses
in their regular school schedule.

Online Professional Development
for Teachers and Other Staff
Effective professional development helps teachers to continue
enhancing their knowledge and skills throughout their careers.
There are various modes for delivering high quality professional
development such as courses, workshops, institutes, symposiums
and conferences. In addition to the traditional offerings,
BCPS offers online professional development. Online professional
development enables more teachers to participate in learning
because of the widespread availability of the Internet and
technology tools in our schools and homes.

e-Communities
An e-Community is a vibrant environment
allowing participants to exchange ideas, share successes and
challenges, and provide support to one another. e-Communities
use an learning management system (LMS) to host online courses,
supplement face-to-face instruction, and support communication
between school-based staffs, curriculum offices, and/or professional
development participants.

Orientation Resources
- In order to provide online learners with a smooth ride
in an online course, the link below contains required software
and plug-ins that will help to access course content and
resources. For each item, begin with the software test/check.
Then, get the required plug-in, if necessary, using the
identified link.
- Online courses are generally organized in a Learning Management
System (LMS). The LMS provides tools that allow for communication
between participants, storage of content and files, methods
for submitting work electronically, and other features that
function as an online classroom. Many of the BCPS online
courses use the Desire2Learn (D2L) LMS.
