Technical Orientation Considerations

In order to provide online learners with a smooth ride in an online course, the list below contains required software and plug-ins that will help to access course content and resources. For each item below, begin with the software test/check. Then, get the required plug-in, if necessary, using the identified link. .

  1. Adobe Reader: You may need this to view .pdf documents.
Test document (Click this link to test your ability to view PDF files)
If you CANNOT view the test document above, you may get the required plug-in at:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.
  1. Flash Player: You may need the most recent version of the Flash player, version 8, released in Oct. 2005.
Test page (If you can view this document, you have the plug-in.)
You can get this free plug-in at: http://www.macromedia.com/software/flashplayer/.

  2. Security Settings:
    • Some browsers will block Active X and Flash Content. You can recognize that this is happening if you see a yellow bar along the top of your browser window. Each browser handles security in a different manner, but you can unblock this content by clicking on the yellow bar and following the instructions provided. security bar
    • It is important that your browser accept pop-ups. Many of the learning management system links open in a new window; therefore, if your browser has pop-ups DISABLED, you will not be able to view these links. To enable pop-ups, use the Tools menu in your browser. Scroll down to Pop-Up Blocker and make sure you are allowing pop-ups. If you have a Yahoo! toolbar, you may need to right-click on the toolbar and enable pop-ups, as well.

  3. LMS System Requirements: Check to see that your computer works with the Learning Management System (LMS)
Test page: On the login page, click where you see "Click here to do a system check."

  4. PowerPoint: Learners may also need to view PowerPoint files.  A free viewer is available at: PowerPoint Viewer 2003 (Use this plug-in to view full-featured presentations created in PowerPoint 97 and later.)
